Lovely book review. Thanks to Digital Dilettante

Digital Dilettante

My partner has recently been holding a curious fascination with what is known as the dark web. In turn, I delved into the available information in the ‘safe’ internet we all are familiar with, also known as the clear web. The more I had read, the more I wanted to know about it. The internet we know comprises of only 4% of all web pages – 96% resides in the dark web. Think of that unsettling iceberg metaphor – most of it you can’t even see. And the services provided on the dark web range from the subjectively illegal such as drug trafficking, to the downright morally abhorrent such as human experimentation, child pornography, and torture.

Silk Road by Eileen Ormsby details the rise and fall of one of the more tame sections of the dark web; encrypted online drug vending. It explains how another critical invention – the purely…

Last week saw an unusual amount of activity on the dark web’s black markets. We saw generosity, compassion and friendship. We saw thievery and deception. And we saw something that went against everything the original darknet market (DNM) stood for.

It’s probably the biggest exit scam of the darknet markets so far. Evolution marketplace has closed down and bitcoin is moving through the blockchain as I write. it’s hard to tell just yet how much of the $12 million that’s gone through that account the administrators have made off with.

In a move reminiscent of betrayed Atlantis mod Cicero a couple of years ago, Evolution forum mod NSWGreat, confirmed the scam in a Reddit post:

What Me and DoctorX did Next

Posted: October 21, 2014 in Uncategorized

My latest mainstream piece is a feature in The Age profiling Silk Road’s much-respected DoctorX. The only SR user, as far as I can remember, to be quoted by Dread Pirate Roberts in his sig, with the memorable: ‘All drugs are absolutely harmless. If you leave cocaine, MDMA, meth or DMT on a table, they won’t try to assault you, rape you or hit your balls.’

I have a new PGP key. It can be found in the ‘About’ page of this site.

I took may Mac to the Genius Bar recently and the genius decided I need to do a full clean reinstall. I had done a Time Machine backup before going, so I didn’t think much of it.

Unfortunately, I foolishly neglected to export my private key to a USB before doing the reinstall. I thought I would get my key back by restoring from the backup. Newsflash: that doesn’t work.

So I can’t decrypt anything encrypted to my old key. Apologies for any inconvenience this causes.

Sorry I’ve been too busy to update my blog recently, but for now, do yourself a favour and head over to the Daily Dot, where the talented Patrick O’Neill has written up an astonishing story of Nod, Silk Road heroin kingpin, DPR confidant and Homeland Security informant:  The final confessions of a Silk Road kingpin.

Below is a message from Silk Road’s last remaining moderator, Cirrus.

It’s been just over a month since Silk Road got seized and Ross Ulbricht, allegedly the site’s founder Dread Pirate Roberts, was arrested. A new Silk Road market has opened up, 24 hours after a false start which saw administration try to get things going at the poetic time of  4:20 pm GMT on 5th November . But is it truly the phoenix of Silk Road, a honeypot or an ingenious con?

Few people imagined that the closure of the largest illicit drugs market in the world would stop people from wanting to procure narcotics. In fact many predicted it would set off the so-called ‘Hydra effect’ – cut off the head and five more spring up in its place. And that’s pretty much what happened.

Which Pirate is that?

Last week, Silk Road spokesman Dread Pirate Roberts broke a longstanding silence, granting an interview to Andy Greenberg of Forbes magazine.  In it, he finally admitted Silk Road’s worst-kept secret – the person posting as Dread Pirate Roberts and steering the ship was not the same person who founded Silk Road.

Who's holding the keys to Silk Road now?

Who’s holding the keys to Silk Road now?

This came as no surprise whatsoever to regulars on the Silk Road forums. The bigger questions are: which number is this particular DPR?  How many people now post from the DPR forum account? And are they merely PR people rather than the owner of the site?

In short, I believe this is incarnation No.3 or possibly No.4.  There is no doubt there’s more than one person using the DPR forum account and it is unlikely any of them are the owner(s) of the Silk Road site.
